About the Animation
The concept. The vision. The process.

The Concept:

Artistically, the animation style I will create looks both simple and stylized, but with a complex composition; merging colors, shapes, and textures. With this animation style I can illustrate a richer story through character interactions and creating a culturally rich world. Walt Disney’s Sleeping Beauty was described visually as “A moving tapestry”, something that I wish to capture throughout this film as well. This film also encompasses historical elements of indigenous people and a different perspective of ethnic legends and myths, and how these stories can still capture the imagination. I hope to capture the essence of this story using multiple graphic programs such as: AfterEffects, Photoshop and Maya.

The Vision:

"As a Mexican-American woman, I believe that this film differs from what we usually see in mainstream films in two ways; within the setting and artistic style. What struck me the most as a child listening to these legends was trying to put together a dynamic mental picture to match the descriptions that were given to me. The story and setting have not been illustrated or attempted in any film/animation adaption. Challenging this norm, and breaking the mold would be an interesting challenge that is also close to home."

The Process:
To encapsulate the dynamic environment these legends take place in, I am going to take a different approach to animation then a normal film. I will turn hand drawn sketches into a fully developed storyboard, that will then be uploaded into several programs to create the rough animation frame by frame. This allows me to have artistic uniqueness in every aspect of this animation- from concept to animated scene. Once the scenes are all completed, I then will color, texture and edit the piece- adding beats of sound to help form the piece as a whole.
As a capstone project, this animation will showcase all of my education in one final thesis. Because our animation department at CSUMB has dwindled, I have been forced to become self reliant and motivated in my education. This has forced me to become a better animator, relying on my raw artistic talent to create pieces rather than template animation.
